Home Security

Always make sure your doors are locked. Every time you open your windows to air out the house, go around and double check the locks in the evening. Many people forget to do this, and the reality is, most burglars gain entry through windows and doors. Lock everything, no matter what time of day it is.

Keep your patio doors locked. If you do not have a lock on the doors, you can still keep your home safe. Place a metal bar or piece of pipe in the bottom track of your door’s slide. It should be the same length as the track of the door.

Broken windows can cause the cold to get into your house. Worse, it is an open invitation for a burglar to enter your home. So, if one of your windows is broken, be sure to have fixed right away. The same applies to broken front doors, back doors, and garage doors.

If you live in a building that has a secured door, do not allow anyone into the building that you don’t know. Many people will hang around and pretend to be a resident or someone else that should be there, so be very careful. If you do not recognize the person, let them know that you cannot let them in.

Invest in solid wood or metal entry doors. Many inexpensive doors are hollow, making them easy to kick in or destroy by a determined intruder. A metal or solid wood door is more secure, especially if you take the extra step of installing it into a metal frame as well.

If you are going away on a vacation, don’t brag about it to friends, co-workers or on Facebook. If you share the fact that you are going to be out of town for several days, you might come back to an empty house. Build a good relationship with your neighbors. Crime is less likely in areas where the neighbors co-operate with other, keeping an eye out for suspicious behavior. Don’t be afraid to make the first move. Offer to watch your neighbor’s property when they go on vacation. In the future, they can return the favor.
